Hampstead School Deliberative Session Mostly Smooth Sailing

HAMPSTEAD - The School District Deliberative Session on Monday evening moved articles relatively smoothly from the warrant to the ballot with a minimum of fuss. The meeting had just under 90 people in the Hampstead Middle School cafeteria.

Article 3, proposing the purchase of 3.38 acres of land on Emerson Avenue adjacent to Central School for $430,000, drew a few questions and comments.

King said she approved of buying the land but not at that price. She said that as the land is assessed for $253,600 and land in Hampstead is at 98 percent of market value, the price included $176,000 extra.

"That's an awful lot of money," she concluded. more

Plans Coming Together for Stevens Hall Rededication

CHESTER - Together with the historical society, the town will be  contributing money to complete interior repairs on Stevens Memorial Hall so that it will be ready for its 100th anniversary rededication this year.

The town will be using $4,500 from encumbered funds, to be combined with $5,500 donated by the historical society, to fix some of the building's original horsehair plaster walls, to paint and repair the tin ceiling in the auditorium, and to improve the floors.

The floors will cost a little under $4,000, the ceiling about the same.

The town's portion will be taken from a $6,800 encumbrance earmarked for Stevens Hall repairs.

Maintenance supervisor Steve Moltenbrey, as well as former historical society president Hilary Hall, were at the Jan. 28 board of selectmen meeting to update the town on the repairs and costs. Hall has been keeping the board informed on both needed repairs and plans for the building's rededication. more

Sandown Deliberative Attracts More than 100

SANDOWN - Just slightly over 100 people came out to Saturday's town Deliberative Session to discuss changes to the warrant that, in just a few weeks, will be up for vote by the town's 4,234 registered voters.

The session ran from 8 a.m. until about 2:30 p.m., relatively short for Sandown, brought about partially by participants' disinclination to go through the budget line by line and send the $3,191,510.68 figure to the ballot with almost no discussion.

Just over 30 people showed up early in the morning, but that number peaked before the discussion on article 13, to split the revenue from the Land Use Change Tax between the general fund and the conservation fund. more
