Selectmen Announce the Start Date for Road Work
Penny Williams
Tri-Town Times

HAMPSTEAD - Work on the Stage Road (Route 121) culvert is to start Aug. 9.

The work is scheduled to take two weeks, and the resulting road closure will disrupt the normal traffic flow between Main Street and Route 111 along Stage Road from Aug. 9 through Aug. 20, if all goes as planned.

Stage Road will be closed to all but resident traffic between the West/ Emerson and Main Street intersection, and Cambridge Road southbound and northbound from Route 111 to just south of Cambridge Road. Traffic heading north will be detoured along Route 111 to East Road to Emerson Avenue and back to Main Street, and the reverse for going south. Vehicles can alternately use West Road to Route 111 and the reverse from Main Street, but trucks on West Road will add a safety element. more

Paving Company in Residential Zone Gets Variance with Conditions
Matt Rittenhouse

CHESTER - After months of being in limbo without a home business permit, Richard and Martha Cooper were issued a variance by the Zoning Board of Adjustment (ZBA), a decision that should allow the Coopers to obtain their home business permit and again operate their paving business from their residential zoned property.

At its July 20 meeting, the ZBA again reviewed the Coopers' case and with a few conditions, all members were comfortable with granting the variance from the section of the zoning ordinances that disallows any activity in the R1 Residential Zone not expressly permitted.

For years the Coopers had been operating a small paving business from their home at 395 Fremont Road without the necessary permits and mandated layout, until former building inspector/code enforcement officer Tom Malley decided it was time to enforce the town's rules. Malley set up a system whereby no resident could register commercial vehicles without first obtaining the proper home business or home occupation permit and abide by the regulations required under those permits. more

Raise Stands After Tie Vote Kills Motion to Rescind
Matt Rittenhouse
Tri-Town Times

SANDOWN - More than an hour of debate Monday night on the merits or lack thereof of a 12 percent pay raise for the assistant summer recreation program coordinator prefaced a split decision by the board of selectmen on rescinding that raise.

The final tally had Selectmen Brenda Copp and Nelson Rheaume voting to rescind and Hans Nicolaisen and Tom Tombarello voting to keep the raise in place. With a tie vote, the motion failed and the raise stood.

The July 26 meeting saw better attendance than the board had seen in years. Between competitive clapping on each side of the argument, a variety of points were laid out for and against the raise. more
